By Ir . Prem Kumar Dato ’ Ir . Fong Tian Yong
Background
The Malaysian Digital Economy Blueprint is underpinned by six strategic thrusts / clusters . Among them , the thrust on Emerging Technology cluster headed by MOSTI is to build enabling digital infrastructure covering the strategies under a ) utilising regulatory measures to expand infrastructure coverage , b ) levering digitalisation to address legacy challenges and c ) enhancing digital technology infrastructure capabilities .
Among the 36 initiatives identified under the Emerging Technology cluster under the code SP2 / S14 is to establish sector specific digital toolkits to facilitate the improvement of digital capabilities of professional service firms .
Board of Engineers , Malaysia ( BEM ) and Malaysian Institute of Architects ( MIA ) were appointed as the lead agencies to handle this .
The targets are : -
• Businesses will be able to further improve their productivity and efficiency and businesses which are at the early stage of digitisation will be able to get a good head start .
• Increase in digital adoption rate across businesses
• 30 % productivity increase across all sectors
In order to evaluate the rate of adoption of digitalisation among Engineering Consultancy Practices ( ECPs ) for the professional engineering service industry , BEM , in collaboration with CIDB / CREAM , initiated a baseline survey in 2022 in the form of questionnaires and focus group deliberations .
