It ’ s important to note that no single eating pattern has emerged as superior for all diabetes outcomes . For example , systematic reviews of trials of greater than 6 months demonstrated the Mediterranean eating pattern had the same health benefits mentioned above , with the only difference being the Mediterranean pattern delayed the requirement for diabetes medication . Similar benefits have been attributed to vegan and vegetarian eating patterns , too .
So , is low carb eating superior for diabetes management ?
Low carb eating is safe for some people with type 2 diabetes in the right setting . There is limited evidence in type 1 diabetes . Self-glucose monitoring and working with a diabetes healthcare team improves the safety of a low carb diet . The carb range of 50g-130g is manageable , but studies have shown the 70g-100g range is more achievable .
There is no single ratio of carbs , protein and fat that is optimal for every person with type 2 diabetes . Increasing an individual ’ s carb awareness can help , along with :
