ARTS AND CULTURE
WHERE everyone feels
BY BYRON LUKAS
AT HOME
THE CITY HUMS WITH ANTICIPATION. STREETS, THEATRES, AND HIDDEN CORNERS OF CAPE TOWN ARE ALIVE WITH A FAMILIAR ENERGY, THE KIND THAT MAKES YOU FEEL INSTANTLY AT HOME. IT’ S SUIDOOSTERFEES TIME.
For 23 years, the kaleidoscopic Suidoosterfees has been a living, breathing canvas of theatre, music, dance, and conversation, bringing artists and audiences together in a celebration of belonging. From 29 April to 3 May, Artscape and venues across the city will open their doors to the magic of home / tuiste a theme that pulses with warmth, connection, and the joy of shared stories.
Home is more than a place; it’ s a feeling, and Suidoosterfees has mastered the art of creating it. The festival was born in Cape Town, nurtured on the stages of Artscape, and over two decades has grown into a sanctuary for creative expression. Here, emerging voices meet established performers; humour rubs shoulders with heartache; music entwines with movement; and every corridor, stage, and gathering space resonates with a sense of welcome.
Dates: 29 April 29 – 3 May 2026 Venue: Artscape Theatre Centre, Cape Town www. webtickets. co. za
From the UCT Little Theatre, the Galloway Theatre at The Waterfront Theatre School, the Mayor’ s Ballroom to POP24 Studio and Nasdak at the Media24 building, Suidoosterfees threads its heartbeat through Cape Town, inviting everyone to step inside.
LAUGHS, TEARS, AND CAPE JAZZ CHEERS
This isn’ t just an Afrikaans festival anymore; it’ s proudly multilingual, where stories unfold in Afrikaans, English, or in the universal language of art itself. Dance, music, and visual arts transcend words, connecting everyone who enters this vibrant tapestry. And 2026 promises a programme more luminous than ever.
