Fronted by founding member Ali Campbell, the legendary voice behind the band’ s biggest global hits, the group continues to captivate audiences worldwide with its signature blend of reggae, dub and pop. UB40 became especially known for their reggae reinterpretations of popular songs, helping bring reggae-influenced pop into the mainstream across the UK, US, and beyond.
Reflecting on the band’ s journey, Campbell says:“ When I first founded UB40 back in 1978, I put everything I had into it – including the compensation money I’ d received from a criminal injury claim. None of us could have imagined we’ d go on to sell over 100 million records and take reggae from Birmingham to the world. It’ s been an incredible journey.”
Originally formed in Birmingham by a multicultural group of friends, UB40 quickly became known for its socially conscious lyrics and accessible reggae sound. With more than 100 million records sold worldwide, the band remains one of the most successful British reggae acts of all time.
During the 1980s, the band rose to international prominence with a string of hit singles, including“ I Got You Babe”( featuring Chrissie Hynde) and“ Kingston Town”. Their reggae interpretations of well-known songs; most notably Neil Diamond’ s“ Red Red Wine” further cemented their global appeal.
Alongside these chart-topping covers, original albums such as Signing Off and Labour of Love reflected the band’ s commitment to meaningful storytelling, tackling real-life social and political themes that resonated deeply with fans. IB
