Takes Jaguars to King Kandy ’ s Castle

Fourth grade Jaguars celebrated the end of ELA Unit 1 ( personal narratives ) by playing the classic board game Candy Land ! During Unit 1 , students read the personal narrative “ Small Steps the Year I Got Polio ,” which tells the story of a girl who contracted polio in the late 1940s . Students also learned that Eleanor Abbott , the creator of Candy Land , had polio as a child and later invented Candy Land so children in hospitals would not be bored . Thanks to the 4th Grade ELA Teachers Mrs . Burke , Mrs . Gilchrist , Mrs . Macuga , Mr . Poziviak , and Mrs . Sciotto .

Youngest Jaguars Learn About Fire Prevention From Special Guests

October 6-12 was Fire Prevention Week , and kindergarten students at both Gill Hall Elementary and McClellan Elementary welcomed some special guests who taught them about fire prevention tips . Pleasant Hills Fire Company stopped by McClellan Elementary , and Jefferson Hills Fire-Rescue visited Gill Hall Elementary . During both visits , kindergarten students learned about the equipment firefighters use , saw a firefighter put on the gear , and saw a fire truck up close .

Elementary Students Experience the Messy , Glowing Sides of Science

Mrs . Gigliotti ’ s scientists at Gill Hall Elementary and Ms . Wargo ’ s scientists at McClellan Elementary spent October performing some seasonal experiments designed to get them excited about science .

Second grade scientists mixed baking soda and vinegar to create pumpkin volcanoes . They learned that when the solid and liquid are mixed , it creates the gas , carbon dioxide . For some added fun at Gill Hall Elementary , Mrs . Gigliotti added highlighter ink to the vinegar and turned on black lights to make the pumpkin volcanoes glow . est Jefferson Hills WEST JEFFERSON HILLS SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS — THOMAS JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL
