Dear Parents and Students of McClellan Elementary School, est Jefferson Hills WEST JEFFERSON HILLS SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS – MCCLELLAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
50 West Jefferson Hills
I hope you enjoyed your summer! I want to be the first to welcome all of our new Kindergarten families to McClellan for the 2016-2017 school year. We can’ t wait for you to be a part of our family and watch your children grow with us throughout the year. And for those families with returning students, we are planning for another exciting year!
We will continue our OLWEUS Bullying Prevention Program with our theme of“ Be a hero, not a bully.” The teachers are instilling in our students the notion that they can be the hero and stand up for someone being bullied. We need your support in this endeavor, so please discuss the weekly topics with your child. You can be a hero, too! Along with our anti-bullying campaign, we will continue to reward students for their kind and positive behaviors as well. The Behavior Bingo board will be hanging up in our front hall again this year. Every time a teacher sees someone displaying a positive behavior, they may send the student to the office to get a bingo number. The student places their name and homeroom on the number and places it in our bingo board. Once we get 10 in a row, all ten students get recognized over the intercom and receive a prize. As part of their prize, they color in a bingo board with their name on it. These are displayed around the big board for all to see.
Another way your child can be recognized is through our Accelerated Reader( AR) and First in Math( FIM) programs. Last year we encouraged our students to be“ M( AR) velous Readers”. All of our prizes for the Accelerated Reader program had a super-hero theme. At our end-of-year celebration we raffled off a lot of wonderful items including super hero toys, books, and gift cards to some of our students’ favorite stores. Best of all, one student from each grade level went home with a Kindle Fire tablet! This year’ s theme is“ Stell( AR) Readers”, so we’ ll have a lot of Star Wars themed prizes. May the force be with you to reach your goal!!! Once again our homerooms will be competing on the First in Math football field. First in Math is an online math tutorial program that awards stickers for completing math problems in a fun and interactive platform. For every 1000 stickers their class earned, their football moved across the Football field in the front lobby. Mrs. DiSilvestro’ s third grade class was the only team to score a touchdown this past year, earning over 75,000 stickers – and capturing the Team of the Month trophy for a record 8 times in a row! Who will be the top team on the FIM Field this year … only time will tell!!!
We also look forward to another year of wonderful assemblies and events planned by our fabulous PTA. We have some new parents on our PTA Board of Directors, and I know they have a lot of fun ideas for this year. We encourage all families to attend our PTA meetings that are conveniently scheduled in the mornings, the afternoons and in the evenings to accommodate everyone’ s busy schedules. Becoming an active member of the PTA not only helps to keep you involved in your child’ s school, but it improves the whole educational experience for all of our students. The first PTA meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 13, at 7 p. m.( there will also be a separate PTA meeting for Kindergarten parents on Monday, September 12 at 7 p. m.) All of our holiday parties and events( like“ Game Night” and“ Field Day”) are not possible without parent volunteers, so start the year off right and join the PTA! Last year the PTA purchased a TV for our front lobby so that we could display important dates, information, and most importantly, pictures of our students( FIM Players of the Week and Teams of the Month, Behavior Bingo winners, Citizens of the Month, Artists of the Month, etc.) This year, the PTA is providing some needed additions to our gym and water fountains. Thank you for continuing to improve our school, and for all that you do for all of the students of McClellan Elementary!
Let’ s have a great year!
