Highlights
National Merit Recognition at PTHS
Five students from Peters Township High School have been
named semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship
Corporation in the annual National Merit Scholarship
Program. These students are among an elite group of 16,000
students from across the nation to earn this honor. Seniors
Anthony Biscardo, Mitchell Dubaniewicz, Caroline Langley,
Shreya Sharma and
Stephanie Wang will now
have an opportunity
to continue in the
competition for National
Merit Scholarships, worth
more than $33 million.
In addition, ten students
have been named
Commended Students
by the National Merit
Scholarship Corporation.
These students are: Akash
Bhat, Anthony Castellone,
Andrew Cuervo, Julia
Derienzo, Sydney Hannah,
Steven Hart, Emma
McCartney, Marissa
McFarlin, Jake Rose and
Robert Virany. These
students will receive a
Letters of Commendation
in recognition of their
outstanding academic promise and can become candidates
for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and
businesses.
Bower Hill Read-a-Thon
Bower Hill students read for more than 191,000 minutes in
two weeks for their annual Read-a-Thon. The event also
serves as a PTA fundraiser and raised more than $23,000 this
year in support of the students. The event also featured a
“Read for the Record” that welcomed special guest readers
into the classroom as a part of the largest shared reading
event in the nation.
Fire Safety Lesson for Kindergarten Students
The Kindergarten Classes at Pleasant Valley had a visit from
the Peters Township Fire Department and Sparky the Dog!
They learned fire safety facts, they learned the career of a
Fireman and how they stay safe and they got to tour the
inside of the Fire Truck. This visit coordinated with their
Fire Safety unit during Fire Safety month.
Rowdy Rhythm Performs at Barbershop Society
Convention
On October 15th, the PTHS Choir “Rowdy Rhythm”, was invited
to perform at the 2016 Johnny Appleseed District (JAD)
Barbershop Harmony Society Convention and Contest in
Cranberry, PA. The event consisted of professional barbershop
choirs from four states who attended, performed, and

competed all weekend. Rowdy Rhythm was the only student
choir invited to perform. The choir performed two songs
to a standing ovation of professional singers that
filled the auditorium. That afternoon, the students were
invited and participated with the professionals at the mass
sing outside Dick's Sporting Goods in Cranberry.

as a member of the PMEA
Honors Band earlier
in November through
a highly competitive
audition process. Honors
Band is an All-Star
ensemble comprised
of the best high school
musicians in the Pittsburgh
area. The ensemble will
be guest conducted by
Pittsburgh native Dr.
Don McKinney who is
the current director of
bands at the University of
Colorado-Boul
