Hillcrest Students Raise Nearly $ 50,000 Through the Annual ‘ Lemonade War ’ Fundraiser
In 2012 , inspired by the novel The Lemonade War — in which the main characters compete to see who can raise more money selling lemonade — a group of fifth-grade classes launched the very first Hillcrest Lemonade War . Over just two days , these students raised more than $ 2,000 for Alex ’ s Lemonade Stand , a foundation dedicated to fighting childhood cancer .
Since then , the Hillcrest Lemonade War has grown and evolved , with each new group of fifth graders finding creative ways to expand its impact . What started with selling lemonade now includes bake sales , raffles , partnerships with local businesses , and even student-designed products .
This year , the Hillcrest Lemonade War reached an incredible milestone , raising nearly $ 50,000 for Andrew ’ s Avengers , an organization supporting families affected by childhood cancer . The students once again showed that no one is too young to make a difference , especially when supported by the kindness and generosity of the Norwin community .

Young Knights
Local preschools and Pre-K classroom teachers teamed up with the Norwin School District to host the first of three Young Knights sessions in November . During this session , Young Knights had the opportunity to tour the buildings and participate in four fine motor stations . Families practiced name writing , cutting skills , holding a pencil , and following directions . Those in attendance also received materials and handouts to continue their readiness skills at home .
The Young Knights preschool transition program is made possible through a grant from the United Way , allowing the District to partner with local preschools to provide a smooth transition into kindergarten . There are two more sessions planned for this school year on Wednesday , Feb . 12 , 2025 and Tuesday , April 8 , 2025 . Registration information will be posted on each of the elementary school ’ s websites the month before . SHERIDAN TERRACE STUDENTS DELIVER SMILES TO TEACHERS AND STAFF
Third- and fourth-grade students at Sheridan Terrace have launched a snack cart this year , taking charge of every step in the process . They created their own signage , advertisements , and gift card designs , gaining valuable experience along the way . The project also helps them develop important money skills , such as adding prices , calculating totals , counting money , and making change .
In addition , students are building social skills by practicing a sales script . They greet customers , take orders , and respond to both yes / no and openended questions . One third-grader shared that working on the snack cart has made him braver and more comfortable talking to new people .
In the spirit of Thanksgiving , the students recently added $ 1 gift cards where staff can gift an item from the cart to a colleague . The students enjoy spreading cheer among the building and are always excited for Snack Cart Day to arrive .
