Norwin Students Go the Distance with Kids of STEEL
This spring, two schools within the Norwin School District hit the ground running through their participation in Kids of STEEL— a free youth training initiative designed to promote physical fitness, healthy habits, and goal-setting through enjoyable and engaging group runs. Both Hillcrest Intermediate School and Sheridan Terrace Elementary concluded seasons that celebrated not only physical achievements but also school spirit and a strong sense of community pride.
Hillcrest Intermediate completed its fourth season of the Kids of STEEL program, guided by their coaches Natalie Janov and Trisha Brunazzi. Open to 5th and 6th grade students, the program continues to grow in both participation and enthusiasm. This season, Hillcrest runners trained for several major events, including the Pittsburgh 5K, the Kids 1-Mile Run, and the Race for Grace 5K. Students built endurance and confidence during after-school practices, with many proudly crossing the finish line of their very first official race.
Meanwhile, Sheridan Terrace Elementary marked an exciting milestone with the launch of its inaugural season of Kids of STEEL, led by Lauren Karcher. The program welcomed young runners from kindergarten through 4th grade, who trained together while developing foundational habits for lifelong health and wellness.
Through their participation in Kids of STEEL, students discovered that running is about more than speed or distance— it’ s about perseverance, teamwork, and mutual encouragement. Most importantly, the program offered every student the opportunity to be part of something healthy, empowering, and fun at no cost to families.
Whether it was a student’ s first mile or a celebratory high-five at the finish line, this season demonstrated that every step counts. We look forward to seeing where their feet will take them next! orwin
