Norwin Lady Knights Track Celebrates Their Historic Championship Season
The Norwin Girls Track team had an extraordinary 2024- 2025 season, capturing their first WPIAL team championship since 2009 while also winning their seventh consecutive Section title and the Westmoreland County Meet. With an undefeated record of 39-0 since 2017, the Lady Knights demonstrated dominance throughout the playoffs, decisively defeating opponents such as Pine-Richland, Plum, and Laurel Highlands before overcoming strong competition from North Allegheny, Butler, and South Fayette to secure the WPIAL title. Their success was a true team effort, with contributions across sprints, hurdles, distance events, jumps, and throws, led by standout seniors like Mel Schmidt, Brandi Brozeski, and Lexi Heller, as well as talented underclassmen including sophomores Myla McCabe and Karina Karadus.
The team’ s strength lies not only in its senior leadership but also in its promising younger athletes, ensuring a bright future for the program. Head coach Timothy Van Horn has cultivated a cohesive and competitive squad that excels in both track and field events. Individual performances were impressive across the board, with athletes setting records, earning medals, and consistently scoring points to keep the team undefeated. The Lady Knights’ ability to perform at their best against tough competition and maintain their winning streak speaks to their dedication, teamwork, and balanced roster, marking this season as one of the most successful in Norwin’ s track history.

The Norwin boys track team achieved a historic milestone by winning their first WPIAL team title since 1977, securing a narrow victory over North Allegheny and Butler at the championship meet on May 6, 2025. The team demonstrated remarkable depth and talent, with multiple athletes finishing atop their events, including standout performances in hurdles, middle-distance, and sprints. Throughout the season, Norwin showed consistent dominance in their section, claiming their fifth consecutive section title and maintaining an impressive overall record since 2017. Key athletes like Thomas Gaydos and Ryan Schiller broke long-standing school records, and the team’ s success was further boosted by the emergence of top freshmen performers,
