Kids of Steel
Kids of Steel is a training program designed to motivate kids and their families to get active together . Available through over 250 schools and community organizations in Western Pennsylvania , the program has seen enthusiastic participation . Over the past few months , Hillcrest fifth and sixth-grade students have been meeting after school to improve their physical fitness , with a focus on running . Some students opted to run or walk in the Race for Grace in April . Earlier this spring , the group had a great turnout for the Pittsburgh 5K and one-mile fun run . This is our second season of Kids of Steel at Hillcrest , and we plan to continue the program next year !
Norwin School District Shines at Westmoreland Interscholastic Reading Competition
This spring , students from across the region participated in the Westmoreland Interscholastic Reading Competition ( WIRC ) held at Seton Hill University . With a total of twenty-seven teams competing at the high school level and twentynine teams at the middle school level , the event saw approximately 600 readers , including the students of Norwin School District .
The competition began in early March with the high school teams , who secured 3rd and 9th place finishes , showcasing their commitment to literary excellence . The momentum continued into the middle school segment of the competition , where a team from Norwin Middle School clinched 1st place overall . In addition , a second Norwin Middle School team secured 9th place , and the Hillcrest Intermediate teams earned 6th and 11th place finishes .
The success of Norwin School District at WIRC reflects the dedication and passion for literature and underscores the district ’ s commitment to nurturing a culture of reading and academic excellence .

Norwin Young Knights
Norwin ’ s four elementary schools recently held their final Young Knights session for this school year . The Young Knights program provides learning activities and readiness information for incoming kindergarten students . Many local preschools partner with the district for these transition nights . The final session focused on phonemic awareness , math readiness , and anxiety . Families were provided with a wealth of materials to continue these skills at home .
Kindergarten registration for the 2024-2025 school year is open . Log on to norwinsd . org and register for your neighborhood elementary school .
Young Knights sessions for the 2024-2025 school year are scheduled for : November 14 , 2024 , February 12 , 2025 , and April 8 , 2025 . Signups will post on each elementary school ’ s website closer to each session . This program is made possible through a grant from the United Way .
