Student Council Hosts Over 300 for Annual ‘ Senior Citizen Dinner ’
Article written by Norwin Communications Student Intern , Suhana Navalgund
With the very last Student Council event for the 2024-25 school year , the students worked extensively to make it the best . On April 21st the High School Student Council hosted the annual Senior Citizens Dinner , inviting seniors from the community to enjoy a warm meal and entertainment . With a “ Disco Fever ” theme , over 300 senior citizens enjoyed a three-course meal that included salad , a turkey dinner , and peach cobbler . The majority of the planning for this event was done by co-chairs of the event : Victoria Marflak , Tyler Patrick , Rylee Pavel , Randi Riazzi , Ava Bobby , Preston Montag , Joshua Bauer , Jazzy Cherry , Eva Martina , Ella Reese as well as student council officers .
The dinner included appearances from the JROTC , Norwin Show Choir , and the High School Honors Orchestra . In addition to show choir performances of their favorite songs including Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Come Alive , the Honors Orchestra also provided entertainment for the senior citizens to enjoy . Freshman council member Ava Bobby , who is also a member of the high school orchestra , noted that her favorite part of this event was “ getting to help with the entertainment by playing in the orchestra .” Like many of the events the student council puts on for the community , she believes that “ it is truly amazing that we get to share our school ’ s great talents with the community around us and show just how much we appreciate them !” Junior Carlie Goretzka , who serves as the council social media representative , was “ honored to participate in this community event .” This event is Goretzka ’ s favorite as she feels it is “ an incredible opportunity for the youth to give back to the senior citizens in the community .”
Thank you to the student council members and volunteers who participated in this amazing event . If interested in attending the next Senior Citizens Dinner , be sure to look out for more information next spring .
Castle Production Lab is Up and Running
The Castle Production Lab ( CPL ) was created in 2022 and is housed at Norwin High School . The CPL is a studentrun print shop specializing in large-format printing , including banners , posters , and repositionable stickers . The students in the lab design , format , and print personalized products , working closely with the customers who place orders .
The CPL Business Office is run by students who manage the website , track orders and billing , as well as order supplies . This year students learned how to get an EIN and collect taxes , as our products are taxable . This process proved to be an amazing learning opportunity for our students and provided an authentic real-world entrepreneurial experience .
At first , the CPL only took orders from within the district , including work in various buildings such as designing and printing the posters for the “ Norwin 9 ”, Homecoming parade signage , and Senior Night for Unified Bocce and Unified Track and Field . These in-house orders allowed students to practice learning the software to produce quality products .
Now the students are ready and eager to provide services to the Norwin community . The CPL website is up and running and has taken orders for personalized graduation banners . The students were thrilled as the orders started to come in and they took pride in producing products for their peers . The team has also created banners for various booster clubs and organizations .
