CITY OF MCKEESPORT NEWS
Mayor Tom Maglicco was proud to stand alongside Congresswoman Summer Lee, Pennsylvania Senator Nick Pisciottano, Pennsylvania Representative Dan Goughnour, the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in April to announce the securing of funds to demolish and reconstruct the Versailles Avenue Viaduct.
The viaduct closure has altered the lives of everyday McKeesporters for the past four years as pedestrian and vehicle traffic has been rerouted to avoid the deteriorating bridge. Previously, funds were being used for planning and engineering to develop a reconstruction plan. With those phases well under way, the federal and state governments have set aside $ 14.7 million for Versailles Avenue in the upcoming Transportation Improvement Plan.
“ Today marks an important step forward for our City,” Mayor Maglicco said.“ I’ m proud to announce that funding is now in place to rebuild the Versailles Avenue Bridge. While we lobbied and pushed for progress for our community, this is not something that McKeesport did alone. It took strong partnership and real commitment.” The mayor said this announcement was about more than infrastructure.“ The Versailles Avenue Viaduct is not just a structure— it is a connection between neighbors. It represents access, opportunity, and unity. This is how people get to work, how families stay connected, and how communities grow stronger together,” he said.“ To me, this project reflects how I try to live and lead. Building bridges means bringing people together. When we invest in infrastructure, we’ re investing in our future … in our neighborhoods … and most importantly, in our children.
“ This is what revitalization looks like. This is what progress feels like. And this is just the beginning for McKeesport. We’ re building more than bridges— we’ re building a stronger McKeesport together.”
