McKeesport Remembers Fallen Veterans
The City of McKeesport honored fallen veterans with ceremonies at Memorial Park and the LaRosa Youth Club. On Memorial Day, Mayor Tom Maglicco welcomed McKeesport Area officials, veterans, and students to Memorial Park along Lysle Boulevard to honor the brave men and women who gave everything in service to our country. Through solemn songs, heartfelt poetry, and prayer, generations stood side by side in gratitude and reflection, ensuring the stories and sacrifices of our fallen heroes are never forgotten.
Later that morning, the LaRosa Youth Club’ s 59th annual Memorial Day remembrance honored 11 club members who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam.

McKeesport Celebrates History of Merchant Marine Vessel
On April 29, the City hosted a ceremony honoring the 82nd anniversary of the SS McKeesport ' s final voyage – not only to mourn the loss of this ship, as it sank on April 29, 1943, but also to remember its service to this great nation.
After transporting supplies to England on one final voyage, the S. S. McKeesport sank in the North Atlantic Ocean after being torpedoed by a German U-boat. The S. S. McKeesport was an old merchant ship that was pressed into service as World War II progressed. It was built in part with steel supplied by the National Tube Works in McKeesport, and at the time of the ship’ s launch, members of that local company and their families participated in the program.
