McKeesport Celebrates Community’ s Generations

Age-Friendly Greater Pittsburgh hosted a McKeesport Community Day on August 16.
Participants gathered on Fifth Avenue for entertainment, food, and sharing our stories about growing up and growing older in McKeesport – with a close-up view of the Age- Friendly window art that’ s currently on display at the People’ s Building.
Mayor Mike Cherepko thanked LaLa Harper and Alena Leggett for coordinating McKeesport’ s participation in the Age-Friendly initiative.
Just a block away, on the exterior of Penn State University’ s Mon Valley LaunchBox, artist Janel Young designed a community mural in partnership with the Allegheny County Area Agency on Aging and Penn State Greater Allegheny. This project was part of part of the ongoing“ Growing Older” initiative.

DICK’ s Foundation Invests $ 250,000 in LaRosa Club

The City of McKeesport welcomes the DICK ' S Sporting Goods Foundation with open arms as the organization ' s generosity takes form in support for after-school services at the LaRosa Youth Club!

Mayor Cherepko thanked Lt. Governor Austin Davis, Sen. Nick Pisciottano, and Rep. Dan Goughnour for joining him and LaRosa CEO Jim Barry Jr. in discussions and planning sessions with DICK ' s Foundation executives upon the organization ' s separation from McKeesport Area schools. This new partnership resulted in a $ 250,000 investment in the LaRosa Youth Club that will allow the McKeesport community to receive vital assistance for out-of-school time programming, including funding for literacy programs, sports, food security, and mental health.“ This is a truly humbling day for me personally and for the kids that we serve and our board members here,” Barry
said.“ To think an entity such as the Dick’ s Sporting Goods Foundation and all the great work they’ ve already done in this city, wants to continue making that investment with us... It’ s certainly humbling.”
