CITY OF MCKEESPORT NEWS

As the weather cools down and we prepare for our community’ s fall and winter events, I encourage everyone to download our McKeesport Mobile app to stay up to date on local events. Our city events include the upcoming Fall Festival on October 2, Halloween Parade on October 25, Salute to Santa Parade on November 22, and Festival of Trees on December 4 through 8.

In this season’ s edition of In McKeesport Area Magazine, you will read about age-inclusivity initiatives taking place in our community – encouraging residents across generations to engage and celebrate one another. So far, we’ ve had middle schoolers taking time during their summer camp sessions to learn about trends and traditions of neighbors who grew up in the 1950s,‘ 60s,‘ 80s, and‘ 90s. We’ ve gathered downtown for a family-friendly fun day and community picnic, where guests were interviewed about growing up and growing older in McKeesport. We’ ve also witnessed the installation of Age Friendly Greater Pittsburgh’ s photo gallery on the People’ s Building and an artist’ s mural created in partnership with Penn State Greater Allegheny and the Allegheny County Agency on Aging on the Mon Valley Launch Box Building.
McKeesport’ s feature stories focus on the 65th annual International Village, the 16th annual Village for Kids, the
Renzie Rib Fest, and Renzie Market. These events, along with the Lions Summer Concert Series, are the highlight of our summer in Renziehausen Park. As always, we thank the Allegheny Regional Asset District for supporting the operation and capital improvements of our beautiful regional park, where visitors gather from across the Mon Valley to experience some of the best activities our region has to offer. This year, our local churches also added an end-of-summer service in the park.
Of all of the events and news items featured in this quarter’ s magazine, I am moved the most by DICK’ s Sporting Goods Foundation reinforcing their commitment to the children of McKeesport through their generous donation of $ 250,000 to the LaRosa Youth Club. During the press conference for this new partnership, I praised the DICK’ s Foundation for what they had accomplished at Twin Rivers Elementary. I am certain that this new venture with LaRosa Club members will be well worth their effort and their funding.
When I attended the LaRosa Club at a young age, I was able to see the benefits of an out-of-school time program firsthand. As an educator in our schools, I saw how it impacted my students. As a City Councilman, and now as Mayor, I’ ve seen the impact that the individuals who run this club have had on our community. They truly care for our community’ s children, and this contribution allows them to provide even better resources through their programs.
