Hutchinson Elementary Revamps Veteran’s Day Program
T
his year, Veteran’s Day festivities at Hutchinson Elementary looked
a little different than they have in previous years. In the past, local
veterans gathered outside of the school for a formal presentation
by students and staff, complete with patriotic tunes by elementary and
high school ensembles, a bagpipe player, honor guard, and sometimes
vehicles from the local fire department.
A more informal approach was taken this year, with veterans being
invited to join their students for a pancake breakfast in the cafeteria
before school for a more intimate gathering. Students were proud to
bring their veteran to school and have one-on-one time and a special
breakfast before some of the visitors departed to classrooms to talk with
students about their military experiences.
The change in format was well-received by both veterans and their
students, who seemed to enjoy just being with one another during the
event.
Sophia Demorest, a 5th grade student in Mrs. Doran’s class, seemed
excited to have two generations of veterans by her side. Both her dad, a
veteran of the United States Marine Corps, and her grandfather, a United
States Navy veteran, joined her for breakfast.
Mrs. Aileen Little led an ensemble of students in singing “You’re a
Grand Old Flag” to conclude the morning meal, while Principal Kevin
Bringe thanked the veterans for their service and for visiting. What a
great way to honor our nation’s heroes!
