Celebrating the Joy of Writing:

Chartiers Valley Middle School’ s Writing Day Activities

At Chartiers Valley Middle School, writing wasn’ t just a subject— it was a celebration. This year, the 8th-grade English Language Arts classes honored the power of words with engaging activities both inside the classroom and in the school’ s outdoor spaces that encouraged creativity and expression.

Earlier this year, students had the special opportunity to connect with a real author during the National Council of Teachers of English’ s free virtual author event. Guided by Amy Bouch in the library, 20 to 30 students participated enthusiastically, sparking inspiration and excitement for storytelling.
After school from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, 8th graders were invited to dive into a variety of writing activities designed to deepen their love for the craft.
The event was led by Ms. Bouch, Mrs. Holleran, and Ms. Ciaramella, with support from educators affiliated with the Western Pennsylvania Writing Project and high school volunteers. Writing activities took place throughout the school, including the MS commons, classrooms, and outdoor areas such as the front entrance, sidewalks, outdoor classroom, and fenced gym area.
Thanks to the Western Pennsylvania Writing Project, materials, writing giveaways, and snacks were provided to enrich the experience. This day was not just about putting pen to paper— it was about celebrating the importance and joy of writing as a vital part of learning and life.

Chartiers Valley Middle School’ s No Place for Hate Group Takes Action

This year, 32 students at Chartiers Valley Middle School have actively led the No Place for Hate( NP4H8) initiative led by Ms. Guaranccio( Health) to promote kindness and inclusion. Early on, the group brainstormed ways hate appears and how to fight it, then launched the year with a lively NP4H8 Kick-Off featuring dancing, banner signing, and a school-wide quilt art project displayed in the common area.

Members received NP4H8 t-shirts and helped beautify the school alongside Mr. Moskala and Mrs. Colwes( Art). They also created monthly bulletin boards on topics like bullying prevention and gratitude, ran a successful Plinko game at the Homecoming Carnival, and made positive message bracelets to sell during Thanksgiving week.
The group posted anti-bullying posters, teamed up with the Empowerment Group and Ms. Bouch to create awareness videos, and spread kindness with sidewalk chalk messages during the Turkey Trot. Future plans include a film festival in partnership with 8th grade ELA classes focused on inclusion and acceptance.
Chartiers Valley’ s No Place for Hate students continue to lead by example, making their school a more welcoming place every day.
