Community Outreach
The North Strabane Township Fire Department considers our
residents its most important community resource. Our residents
have proven time and time again, through
active roles in our programs, that prevention
and preparation are key to staying safe.
For information on NSTFD visiting your
block party or on other outreach services
provided, contact Nick Gerstel at NGerstel@
nstfd.org or 724-745-1010.
Residential Sprinkler
Inspections
Residential sprinkler inspections are
approaching as required by ordinance. Keep
an eye on your mail for notification and
instructions on scheduling your inspection.
Sprinklers reduce fatalities in residences by 80%
and reduce damage by 70%. Installation and maintenance of
your system is important.

N OR TH STR ABAN E TOW N SHI P N E WS
Believe it or not, the number one
killer in the fire service is cardiac events
resulting from over-exertion. North
Strabane firefighters have taken an
aggressive approach to beat this statistic
through routine fitness training. Training
occurs at least 3 times/week and is led by Firefighter/EMT and
Personal Trainer Rick Opfermann.
Mr. Opfermann believes that firefighters have a strong
commitment to remaining healthy, and that responders
should even be considered “occupational athletes”. He leads
functional fitness workouts to keep our responders ready for
any emergency.
While the group started off small, it has spread to some of
the firefighters’ family members and other responders, like local
medics.
