A Titanic Experience SC H OO L DI ST RIC T News rentwood Borough Brentwood Borough School District Fourth grade students at Moore Elementary School recently had the unique opportunity to learn more about one of the most tragic and infamous events in history from someone who visited and studied the wreckage of the Titanic. On October 2, 2013 Lisa Kovacs’ fourth grade class, in coordination with Kate Smeltz, technology teacher, and Maureen Anderson, gifted coordinator, participated in a live Titanic video-conference from Belfast, Ireland. The students connected with over twenty schools in Northern Ireland and four in the United States to take part in this exciting interactive experience. Mike McKimm, a former BBC Northern Ireland correspondent, talked to the schools about his exciting dive to the Titanic in 2005. During the conference students learned about the sinking of the Titanic, watched exclusive footage of the ship on the ocean floor, and saw iconic sights such as the bow and grand staircase. Moore Elementary student Katherine Jones participated in the interactive question and answer session with Mr. McKimm. A screen shot of her question among those from schools in Ireland is shown here. Moore Elementary School has been collaborating with Tim Devlin, program director from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit’s Allegheny CONNECT, to enrich classroom instruction with instructional technology. The Titanic experience was the first in a series of videoconference activities planned for students at Moore Elementary School. Later this month the fifth graders will participate in Dignity and Respect, an activity to celebrate Global Dignity Day, featuring former Pittsburgh Steeler Charlie Batch. 56 Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall
