given honorable mention awards for their 30-second PSA and
poster submission.
Along with receiving their award, the students were asked
to sit on a discussion panel at the conference with other
competition winners and field questions from conference
audience members. Guidance counselors, administrators,
educators and psychologists asked the teens questions about
coping strategies and the best way to approach an adolescent
who may be struggling with depression.
“It was a unique experience teaching adults, but I feel the
members of the panel and I achieved our goal of making sure
each of the audience members left learning something knew
about the teen mindset,” said junior Nick Gall.
The PYSPI plans on sponsoring the PSA competition again
this year and the Comm I students are already brainstorming
ideas for this year’s submission.
Discovering the Wonders of the Public Library
The first grade students from Moore Elementary School
celebrated National Library Card Month by taking a trip
to the Brentwood Public Library on Friday, September 20,
2013. During the visit, students learned library etiquette,
took a tour, participated in story time, engaged in a small
craft, and received their very
own library card! A
library card
provides each child with the opportunity to travel
anywhere in the world just by turning the pages of a
book. It is important to share the joy of reading with
children and allow them to explore the thousands of
resources the library has to offer. The students enjoyed
their visit to the library and look forward
to using their very own
library cards.

Four Brentwood High School students were honored by the
Pennsylvania Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative (PYSPI) at the
Pennsylvania Suicide Prevention Conference in State College,
PA on October 17, 2013.
Juniors Nick Gall, Amanda Henning, Jordan Schwartz and
senior Laura McGowan created public service announcements
(PSA) in Comm I class for the competition sponsored by the
PYSPI last school year. The students found out they won in
May and were asked to be a guest at the annual conference to
receive an award for their PSA.
“It was a surprise to find out that we won. We didn’t think
about the competition after we submitted our PSA. It’s nice to
be recognized for our work,” said Henning.
Schools from around the state of Pennsylvania participated
in the competition and out of the 42 submissions, Brentwood
High School won first place for their 60-second PSA and was
