WHILE FALL LEAVES CAN BE BEAUTIFUL TO LOOK AT , THEY CAN BECOME A NUISANCE .
Disposing of leaves can become a struggle , especially during the months of October and November . Sweeping leaves into the street may seem like an easy solution , but it creates a longterm problem for our ecosystem .
When leaves are swept into the street , they will eventually migrate into the storm sewers . Once in the storm sewers , the leaf debris that carries fertilizers and pesticides , along with other yard waste , will outfall into lakes and streams without any water quality treatment . This pollution promotes the growth of algae blooms that degrade water quality , harming lake and river ecosystems and aquatic life . Leaves can also clog culverts , storm drains and pipes , increasing the risk of flooding during heavy rains .
To avoid harmful effects on our waterways from disposing of leaves , the following alternatives are safe and responsible ways to remove leaves :
4 Take advantage of leaf pick up days – starting October 30st until December 8th , leaves may be placed in recyclable lawn bags and placed out with your trash for collection .
4 Use leaves as mulch around trees , shrubs or in gardens . Decomposing leaves add nutrients to the spoil and act as a natural mulching additive .
4 Leaves can be used as a protectant in cold temperatures to defend flowers and shrubs from frost .
4 Do NOT burn leaves ! It is illegal under the federal Clean Air Act and the Pennsylvania Air Pollution Control Act . In addition to being illegal , leaf burning damages air quality and studies show a link between high levels of particulate pollution released from smoke , to chronic coughs and respiratory illnesses .
