Underground fleet management
To develop the Nickel Rim South project in
Skead, Ontario, Glencore required a complete
new package of underground mining utility
equipment. The program called for design,
fabrication, commissioning and training for a
total of 20 pieces including scissor lifts, crane
trucks, shotcrete haulers, shotcrete sprayers,
ANFO IT modules and fuelling stations.
While Glencore’s equipment and support
needs were well within Marcotte’s normal
capabilities, the team was challenged to meet a
very tight timeframe for delivery to get Nickel Rim
South on-stream within the project budget while
meeting Glencore’s high standards of safety and
productivity.
Nick Schindele,
General Manager of
Product Support at
Ziegler Cat, stresses
the importance of
having reliable
service trucks for
preventative
maintenance. He
says the service body
should be very reliable “so we don’t
have to get stuck in a situation where
we’re looking for additional
resources.”
Ziegler Cat, headquartered in Minneapolis,
services heavy equipment across the upper
Midwest in the USA. It is a Caterpillar dealer with
29 locations in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and
Missouri.
“The things we need to spec out on that truck
are usability,” said Schindele. “Everything that
we service for our machines is mostly going to
be in the ground, so everything that we need to
service for that machine needs to be on ground
level, so that we can access both at ground level
from the truck, ground level for the machine, and
back and forth without having to go up and
down on every machine is our primary
responsibility.”
Maintainer built a
lube truck to meet
Ziegler's specifications
for safety & operator
efficiency. “At Ziegler
we’re about providing
innovation solutions to
make our customers
successful,” concluded
Schindele. “We are
providing those
solutions at night and
away from the customer
to provide the most
uptime. So the more
New Maintainer operator-friendly reel

uptime we have with our truck, the more uptime
we have with the Maintainer, the more uptime we
give to our customer – the more profit they make
– the more successful we are.”
At the end of last year, Maintainer completed
another expansion to its Sheldon, Iowa,
manufacturing plant. The 212 m 3 addition was
prompted in response to increased demand for
Maintainer’s line of mechanics trucks, lube
trucks, and cranes.
The latest features of Maintainer lube trucks
include:
n 8D flat-sided oval diesel tank saves weight.
The new Minecat CF240 personnel carrier was designed from the ground
up to be the most manoeuvrable and fastest mid-size carrier for
underground mining. The cab-forward design and simple chassis makes
maintenance easy and keeps availability at the maximum
