The 1914 Mess Kit
Sophie
The mess kit was used to heat food , or to store food while not eating . When it becomes time , you unlatch the cover , pull out cutlery , and eat . It came with an extra aluminum , flat top , which is used like a lid for storing food . The actual latch piece could be used as a kind of pot handle when heating food , and also has the information of where and when the mess kit was made . Cutlery could be held inside of it , if not food . Many warriors discovered that since it was made of aluminum , it could be easily carved into . Therefor , many soldiers drew and carved into theirs . Some cutlery pieces had wide holes in the ends , so that when it is time to dry your dishes , you can slip the silverware onto the handle bar , and hang it up . Some handles actually had holes in the end of them , to make it easier to hang them up to dry . Most of them were attached with string , because for whatever reason , they had not thought of drilling holes .
