"PCB Workshop" T he 'IEEE Circuit Jam' organized by the IEEE Student Branch Chapter of the University of Peradeniya, for the students of the Faculty of Engineering was conducted successfully on the 22nd and 24th of May, 2018. The program was mainly aimed towards the second year undergraduate students of the Departments of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Engineering. The purpose of this workshop was to give the par cipants a hands-on experience on designing, manufacturing and finishing a Printed Circuit Board. It's an essen al skill for the students of almost all engineering disciplines, which will be beneficial for their projects and industrial prac ces as well. First day of the PCB design workshop commenced with an introductory session at the premises of Faculty of Engineering. During this session, the par cipants were educated on the values and benefits of PCBs and the means through which PCBs could be manufactured without the use of any fancy or advanced machinery. Also, they were introduced to the Eagle Cad so ware and its basic func ons a er which the par cipants were given an opportunity to design a PCB using Eagle Cad, as per the instruc ons given. The circuit's func on was to blink an LED with the aid of transistors and capacitors. At the end of the session, all the par cipants had completed their designs, and were able to design a PCB using the basic func ons of Eagle Cad. The second day of the PCB Design Workshop was conducted at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. During this session, the par cipants were taught how to print the designed PCB and to solder it to obtain the finished product. They were constantly supervised throughout the session and special considera ons were given for their safety. At the end of the second session, all the par cipants succeeded in designing their PCBs to a func onal level.
