OPPOSITION PREVIEW
Boston United Football Club
SCOUTING REPORT
THE MANAGER - DENNIS GREENE
Former St Neots Town and Histon manager Dennis Greene was appointed Boston United boss in
March 2013. He had initially lost out to Graham Drury in December 2012 when the vacancy was first
available — but took control following Drury’s ill-fated spell in charge of the Pilgrims. He arrested
United’s alarming slide down the table with three straight wins to alleviate any fears of relegation and
spent the remainder of the campaign assessing his squad ahead of his first full season in charge in
2013-2014. As a player, Greene played for a number of non-league clubs, including the likes of Harlow,
Stansted, Epping, Bishop’s Stortford, Stambridge, Chelmsford City, Wycombe Wanderers and
Dagenham and Redbridge. He was part of the Wycombe side that won the Conference and FA Trophy
double in 1992-1993 and also played his part in Wanderers’ promotion from Division Three via the playoffs the next season.
THE KEY MEN
LIAM MARRS
Defender
Sunderland defender Liam Marrs joined Boston United on a two-month loan deal in November 2013.
The right-back has been at the Stadium of Light since the age of 12 and made his Pilgrims’ debut
against Brackley Town. He was an unused substitute for the Black Cats in four matches under Paolo Di
Canio at the end of last season and his loan spell with the Pilgrims initially runs until New Year’s Day
2014.
BEN MILNES
Midfielder
Former Leicester City youngster Ben Milnes arrived at The Jakemans Stadium in July 2011 following a
successful trial spell with the Pilgrims. The diminutive playmaker had progressed through the ranks at
Leicester but was released without making a senior appearance. Capable of playing across the midfield
area, he made his United debut in the Lincolnshire Senior Shield at Lincoln United. His impressive first
season with the Pilgrims was rewarded with a new one-year contract in the summer of 2012 — and he
signed another new one-year deal in July 2013.
MARC NEWSHAM
Forward
Former Rotherham United youngster Marc Newsham helped Ilkeston Town achieve promotion in May
2009 and six weeks later became Boston United’s latest summer signing following his release by the
Millers. Newsham grabbed the headlines by scoring 29 goals as the Pilgrims earned promotion to Blue
Square Bet North at the end of 2009-2010. He scored eight goals in Ilkeston’s charge into Blue Square
North and was quickly snapped up for the Pilgrims by Rob Scott and Paul Hurst when he became
available. Newsham had enjoyed previous loan spells with Sheffield FC and Gainsborough Trinity earlier
in his career. The 2010-2011 campaign was interrupted by a series of niggling injuries, but Newsham
agreed a new deal in the summer of 2011 and netted 21 times. He signed new contracts in both 2012
and 2013 and prepared for the 2013-2014 campaign having taken his United goals tally to 86 goals in 181 appearances.
