Join the workplace revolution and ‘ get up offa that thing ’ to wiggle and waggle it this On Your Feet Britain day
The average UK office worker sits 10 hours each day , despite growing scientific evidence that prolonged sedentary behaviour brings multiple health risks including cardiovascular disease , Type 2 diabetes , certain cancers and mental health issues . Friday 27th April is the time to say : No more ! Offices all over the country are signing up in their masses to encourage workers to vote with their feet for better health by taking part in On Your Feet Britain ( OYF ).
On Your Feet Britain is a free event to encourage sedentary workers to participate in a variety of fun and simple activities in their workplace that mean they # SitLess and # MoveMore and - most importantly - avoid “ binge sitting ” habits . Now in its fourth year , OYF is run by the Get Britain Standing campaign , in association with Active Working , a community interest company . More than a million office-based workers took part last year , with some TWO MILLION set to join in for 2018 .
Put simply , On Your Feet Britain is a day which enables you to take music legend James Brown at his word , ‘ get up offa that thing ’ and convert sitting time to standing time by taking some simple actions . It ’ s easier than you think , just follow these tips :
“ With growing awareness of the damage sedentary behaviour has on the nation ’ s health , we are confident that more workers than ever will take part in this year ’ s On Your Feet Britain day . We expect more than a million companies to encourage their staff to # sitless and # movemore on Friday 27th April . It ’ s FREE to take part and we have prepared a comprehensive toolkit downloadable from our website so the event can be run by anybody anywhere ,” explains Gavin Bradley , founding director of Active Working and the Get Britain Standing campaign .
“ It is important for office workers to do simple and obvious things to break up their sitting time , and understand that by doing so it will benefit their health , resilience and motivation . Business leaders are increasingly getting the message that a fit , healthy workforce makes for a better bottom line with increased productivity and reduced absenteeism .”
On Your Feet Britain is a free event , which is run by volunteers or workplace champions in your office building . Anyone can sign-up via the On Your Feet Britain website and download the On Your Feet toolkit which includes guidelines , communication materials and posters .
