HSE International ISSUE 111 | Page 5

FOREWORD Welcome to the first issue of HSE International for 2018! D espite much of the UK and Europe battling what we’re hoping is the final, bitter blast of winter, at HSE International, we’re very excited to share plans for what is looking to be our busiest year yet. Firstly, we are proud to announce that HSE International Magazine is now a member of The British Safety Council. We’re very grateful to be welcomed by the Council; a key organisation who we’ve always supported and promoted in their mission to make sure no- one is injured or made ill at work. Becoming a member of the British Safety Council demonstrates our continued commitment towards keeping both our own organisation and our readers healthy and safe. Next, we’re thrilled to announce two new Media Partnerships: • The Health & Safety Event – The NEC Birmingham, 10-12 April 2018; and • Health & Safety North – EventCity Manchester, 9-10 October. These events have been developed, alongside Scotland Works (The SEC, Glasgow, 12-13 September 2018), by Western Business Exhibitions to suit anybody responsible for running a safe and efficient workplace. Complimentary copies of HSE International will be distributed at both events and we look forward to attending and reviewing the shows for upcoming issues of HSE International Magazine. In addition, we are confirmed, for the second year running, as Media Partners with Safety & Health Expo 2018, taking place between 19-21 June at ExCel, London. Again, free copies of the magazine will be distributed at the Expo and we’ll be attending and reviewing this years’ exhibition. I’ll be taking my camera to all three events and look forward to meeting you there and capturing the finest moments of each day! Our cover theme for this issue is Working at Height – a leading cause of workplace injuries and fatalities. In 2016/2017, 18% of those who died at work did so as a result of a fall from height. We present an exclusive focus on work at height that includes information and advice on Regulations compliance, PPE and planning, myth busting and more. We hear from PASMA (Prefabricated Access Suppliers’ & Manufacturers’ Association) about the journey and conversion of PAS 250 – the Publicly Available Specification for low-level work platforms – to BS 8620 - the full British Standard. James Wilson, BSI’s publishing manager for built environment says: “BSI acknowledges the work that PASMA and other stakeholders have completed towards the conversion of PAS 250 to a full British standard. Its publication should ensure wider recognition of the product standard for low-level platforms.” We also hear from IPAF (the International Powered Access Federation), who after 35 years, continue to deliver quality training, safety and technical guidance while showing leadership in the ongoing fight to curb falls from height worldwide. Andrew Delahunt, IPAF’s Global Director of Technical & Safety says: “The work IPAF does is absolutely critical and I believe I will be able to bring skills and experience garnered over many years in the industry to help move the global technical and safety agenda forward.” Magazine Manager Jonathan Seale Editor Katrina Kendrick Senior Projects Manager Roger Harker Production Manager Rosalie Clarke Magazine Design Roland Scriver 111.
