Volunteering at Houston Food Bank
By: Hasan Yacoub
Our own Harmony School of Discovery’s
National Honor Society members visited the
Houston Food Bank on April 4th. The President
of NHS, Ankit Nanda, was asked, “How has
your visit to the Houston Food Bank affected
your life?” He responded with, “It made me realize how many people are hungry in Houston.
We made 1209 boxes and that barely put a
dent in the amount of people that need to be
helped. The Houston Food Bank has a food
drive every week and they still need as much
help as they can get.”
The NHS wanted to help out the community, so
they agreed to help out the Houston Food Bank.
This organization was chosen because of their
history and reputable work. The NHS group
made “Senior Boxes,” and every box made contained about 28 meals. The six NHS members
that volunteered made over 31,000 meals for
the homeless. As Nanda said, “This is only a
small dent into the hunger of our community, so
2015 First Quarter Events
By: Steven Paultanis
In the first quarter of 2015, many things
shocked us, gave us distress, and left us heartened This article sums up the significant events
that happened in the first quarter of 2015.
In January, the tragic Charlie Hebdo shooting
occurred, with 12 people being killed and 11
left with non-fatal injuries. The shooting was
done by two Islamic gunmen, Chérif and Saïd
Kouachi whose motive was to shut down an
organization mocking the Prophet Muhammad,
according to Michael Moore, former director of
the CIA, from an analysis by CBS news. In late
January, the ceasefire in Ukraine, the Minsk
Protocol, had shown its collapse, with the separatists forces winning the Second Battle of Donetsk Airport. On February 3rd, the Argentinian
President, Cristina Elisabet Fernández de
Kirchner, went under investigation for the possible involvement in the death of Alberto Nisman.
we need to work consistently if we want to make
a change.”
It is recommended that every person who has a
chance to volunteer at the Houston Food Bank
should do so.
Some people may say that they “don't have time”
or “I don't have a ride”, but, it would be very beneficial for students to volunteer. It gives people
the chance to give back to the community.
Leojay Arbilo, Abdullah Siddiqi,
Stacey Dejean,
Ankit Nanda,
Ahmed Noubani and
Hasan Yacoub receive a
cer ficate for volunteering.
Later on, February 27th, Boris Nemtsov, opposition leader and vocal critic of Vladimir Putin,
was assassinated in Moscow.
In the final month in the first quarter, on March
6th, Boko Haram, an Islamic terrorist organization, pledged its allegiance to ISIL/ISIS, or the
Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant/Syria.
Three days later, 48 U.S. Republican Senators
signed an open letter that warned the Iranian
officials about the nuclear deal that was going
on with Obama and Iran.
While the 1st quarter of this year left us with
some major events, hopefully less tragic events
will come in the next quarters.
