How to Coach Yourself and Others Better Coaching Through Visualisation | Page 59
1. Think of a time you were really, really confident. Imagine every
detail, as if you were looking through your own eyes. See, hear and
feel those great feelings. Squeeze your index finger and thumb
together whilst doing this (you may have heard of this technique,
which is called anchoring). After several times of doing this just
squeezing your index finger and thumb alone should produce some
positive and confident feelings. Use this ‘anchor’ when you are
thinking about or in the situation you’d like to have more confidence
in.
2. Visual Mental Rehearsal: Think of a specific situation in relation
to your confidence. For example, if you’d like more confidence in a
social situation, imagine yourself there. See it as if it was a movie,
seeing yourself laughing and talking easily and effortlessly with
others. Visualize this as often as you can, and you can even listen to
some upbeat music so you feel good when you’re imagining.
3. Get into the physiology of confidence: Think of someone you
know who is really confident. Vividly imagine how their posture
looks, how they carry themselves, how they walk and talk, how loud
they speak, how they sit, how they greet people. Now, get yourself
into consciously training your body to act in the same way. Keep a
mental check on yourself and change your posture, your tone of
voice, your body language. Just simple changes can give you an
instant confidence boost anywhere.
4. Eliminate self doubt through autosuggestion. You know how
powerful adverts are? That’s because they deliver a repeated
message which sinks into our unconscious mind. You can create
messages to yourself and continually reaffirm them when
visualizing. It can be something as simple as ‘ I conduct my
presentation with ease and confidence’. You can say the phrase out
loud or imagine that you saying it to themselves and see yourself
feeling good.
