Hungry for the Word in Japan

By Kylie Lau, OMS Japan Field Director
When I learned his name meant“ storm,” I was shocked yet unsurprised. His usual cheerful demeanor didn’ t match the name, but my first encounter with him told a different story.
That day, he entered our fellowship meal and Bible study like a dark thundercloud; his face looked like a storm. His brow was furrowed, and when he finally responded to our friendly greetings, he muttered incoherently and barely noticed anyone talking to him. His face was hard, but his eyes lit up just a bit when he saw the food and realized he could return for multiple servings.
At first, he seemed largely disinterested when it came time for us to read the Bible together after dinner. Mostly silent and broody, he only commented when he had something irrelevant or challenging to say. Nevertheless, he ate— and he ate well. His interest in what we served for dinner seemingly outweighed any other curiosity. Slowly but surely, we saw his hunger for God’ s Word grow as he became increasingly engaged in the Bible studies. After a few months, this young man gave his life to Christ. He discovered the Bread of Life, who would satisfy his soul forever.
Storm told his university friends about the free“ all-you-can-eat buffet” he had found.
