LOCKDOWN CHALLENGE
Let me tell you , it is no easy feat travelling as far as three hours feeling like a walk in the park . By hour and the thought of sitting down is becoming more and more appealing . At the three quarter mark you ’ re hobbling in pain , barely able to walk . Eleven teachers and 11 students volunteered for this .
The idea initially began during Level 4 Lockdown , as a fun outdoors competition that would not only keep our school connected but strengthen the connection between students and teachers . It was also a way of fundraising for the charity KidsCan , which helps the most vulnerable families within Aotearoa , providing them with food parcels and other essentials . Over two organised the logistics of the event , before coming up with the Lockdown Challenge .
The rules of the challenge were simple . 1 . Participants have 12 hours ( 7am-7pm Saturday 9th May ) to travel as far as possible by foot 2 . Participants must travel by foot and only foot ( no cars , bikes , scooters , rollerblades , rockets , or any other form of non-pedestrian transport ) 3 . Participants must provide evidence of distance completion 4 . It does not have to be continuous . ( You can go out for a 20km run and come home . Or go out for 5 x 4km runs . Just as long as you provide evidence ) 5 . If you think it ’ s cheating ….. it probably is
In summary , the Lockdown Challenge would be a competition between students and teachers to see who could travel the furthest distance in an effort to gain bragging rights and claim the Lockdown
Challenge shield . The Volunteers : eleven of some of Gertsch , Mrs Loach , Mr Hokianga , Mrs Vennell , Mr Mr Morrison vs the eleven Forum Committee students : Amy Culham , Will Tidswell , Campbell Lane , Wiremu Shaw Throp , Frances Rainbow , Ashlee Greaves , Kayla Lythgoe , James de Groot , Ella Roberts , Liam O ' Reilly , Maddy Clarke .
By 6:59am on the day of the challenge , students and teachers were ready to compete . Throughout the day regular updates of distances from both sides were tallied and posted on the HNHS Facebook page and schoology , to keep the community up to date . The students were ahead early on , and by 3pm ( after nine gruelling hours of walking , jogging , running ) the teachers were on 287km whilst the students were 31km ahead at 318km , making it look as though there was no possible comeback . But amidst every great story , there is a great man . The teachers had not been beaten yet . The man , Geoff Morrison , partnered with his wife had been walking the entirety of the day and had not yet logged his entry . Where was Geoff ? And when 7pm ticked over it was announced that the victors would be declared the following day with a video stating the results of the Lockdown Challenge .
“ The champions of the 2020 LOCKDOWN CHALLENGE were ... the staff !” The teachers had managed to rack up an incredible 487.92km with the students 31.62km behind on 456.3km . Throughout the entirety of the event the community were absolutely incredible ! With the amazing support from everyone , the Lockdown Challenge managed to raise a total of $ 6,100 for KidsCan . It truly was an awesome event !
