In February of this year we were elected as the leaders of Havelock North High School ’ s Community Services Committee . To be appointed in these positions was an honour and we are incredibly grateful to Mrs Littley- Va ’ asili and our fellow committee members for giving of laying out a general plan for the year . A list of charities we wanted to support was formed alongside various events we wanted to host throughout the year . With us and our fellow committee members eager to help our community , 2020 had a very promising start . However , COVID-19 made a global impact and New Zealand was put into a strict lockdown . The committee ’ s planned Easter mufti-day event for the SPCA was unfortunately cancelled . Despite the challenges we faced due to COVID-19 , we wanted to ensure we made the most out of this opportunity . While the effects of COVID-19 were mitigated in New Zealand , there were still many families and organisations in need of support . Upon our return to school we decided to look into charities that were in more dire circumstances . After various discussions , the committee looked to support Cranford Hospice . Due to the impact of the pandemic , Cranford Hospice this mufti day was ‘ rainbow ’ which was in celebration of pride month ( June ). The committee was happy to support such a great local charity and to show our support for the LGBTQ + community . On this day , one of our teachers , Mrs Moys , kindly volunteered to run a pride themed photo booth with props during the lunch hour , which many students participated in and enjoyed . Thanks , Mrs Moys ! As previously mentioned ,
34 the abrupt end to term one meant we lost one of our mufti days for the year . However , we did not take this as ‘ one less charity to support ’. Instead we decided to support two charities at once . For the term three mufti day the SPCA and Starship Children ’ s Hospital were the selected charities . The theme for this muftiday was “ pyjama day ”, something students of all year levels were excited about and could have fun with . Advertising was a key part of the success of the muftidays . Instead of just putting posters up , we and our fellow committee members went around form classes announcing the events . We applied this strategy to our other committee events , such as the annual Relay for Life . At the start of term four we got a HNHS team and participated in the annual event . However , this year ’ s Relay for Life was different . Instead of running around the sports track for 12 hours , each team collectively moved around the Hastings Sports Park and participated in activities that each had a take-home message about cancer . In addition to Relay for Life , in term four we also worked with the Environmental Committee to raise funds for Maui dolphins with an “ under the sea ” themed mufti day . Ms Jones and members of the Environmental Committee hosted a outside her form class . This year would not have been as successful as it was for our committee , had it not been for the support of Mrs Littley-Va ’ asili and our incredible committee members . It is also important that we thank the rest of Havelock North High School for always showing their support at our various events and mufti days . Best of luck to next years leaders !
