MANA TAUIRA

Mana Tauira is a celebration for the incredible Year 13 Māori and Pasifika students who will be leaving our school at the end of the year . It ’ s to celebrate the last five years and the struggles and support they ’ ve had through their time . Students are celebrated and acknowledged for their contribution and hard work , with each student having kind words said about them and receiving a certificate and bouquet of flowers to acknowledge them . It is also a time whereby students acknowledge the wonderful education and excellent teachers that have contributed to their time here at HNHS .
This was supposed to be a celebration that the students could share with their parents . Unfortunately , due to Covid restrictions , parents were unable to attend . Thankfully , this didn ’ t take away from the delightful atmosphere of the occasion . To conclude the event , students and teachers were able to share a Hangi together on our school grounds which students had helped to prepare .
I was lucky enough to be able to attend this special event . I am part of the Taiohi Tū Committee this year with Nicholas and Rosemary which has been an incredible opportunity for me to be more involved in the Māori Culture at our school . It was an emotional event for me , opening my eyes to how close we have become over the last five years . It was also empowering to hear what my form teacher had written about my time at the school . This event has given me a much greater appreciation for Māori Culture and Te Reo Māori and I was grateful to be able to attend my first Hangi . Thank you .
