LGBT + GROUP
The Havelock North High School LGBTQIA + group has worked well and hard together to raise awareness and to help create an accepting and safe space for our queer students .
With a mainly-junior run group , we ’ ve managed to come up with several concerns around the school , including the uniforms , lack of gender neutral bathrooms , a proposed public pride group etc . We have been working our hardest to come up with solutions and researching how other schools have dealt with these issues .
Our group was created for our LGBTQIA + students to feel comfortable , informed , and to have a voice in our community . With queer motivational speakers , events like the pride week bakesale , and informative and open conversations about sexuality , gender identity and everything inbetween .
Our group is kept completely private , with the names , sexuality / gender identity , and anything else that could potentially identify them as a part of the group , kept inside meetings only . We will never expect any members to participate in our public events ( bakesale , for example ), in case they do not feel comfortable sharing that part of them yet .
As leader of the group , I look forward to helping our queer students and hope they feel the same . I believe that my time as leader this year has helped the members of the group feel more comfortable in how they express themselves , and inspires them , as well as our staff and peers , to be prideful , and better respect the diversity in our school and communities .
