in their first year of football last season. Jack Holloway’s Trojans completely dominated the
action, rolling up 395 yards total offense while Dick Massengill’s Tigers to a net gain of 10 yards
and a minus 45 yards rushing. Fullback Bob Goldsby and half-back Sonny Stafford scored two
touchdowns each for the Trojans and halfback Tim Gibson got the other one. Stafford’s TDs
were on passes from quarterback Joe Miller.
The Trojans must have come close to a record for penalties and yards penalized. They
were punished for a total of 205 yards with 11 penalties counting 15 yards each. A total of 17
penalties were stepped off against the winners. The Trojans struck early in the first quarter when
Goldsby went four yards to cap a 61-yard drive. Stafford added the extra point. With two
minutes left in the first half, Miller connected with Stafford on a 210 yard TD pass. Stafford
kicked his third extra point.
Northeast struck again with two minutes left in the third period when Goldsby raced 28
yards for the touchdown. The final touchdown came with 59 seconds left in the game when
Miller tossed 11 yards to Stafford in the end zone. Goldsby was the game’s leading ground
gainer with 142 yards rushing. The top Southeast ball Carrier was halfback Roy Garrison, with a
net gain of five yards. Miller connected on seven of 14 passes for 103 yards. Southeast
quarterbacks Bill McInnis and Richard Mathis hit on seven of 18 for 55 yards. Northeast seeks
its second win Friday night when it hosts Decatur.

City and County – School Enrollment Reaches Record High
Public school enrollment in Meridian and Lauderdale County this year reached a record
high of 17,024. County enrollment stood at 4,767 and city enrollment, 12,257. Both city and
county figures represent an increase over last year’s 16,284. County enrollment increased by
270, and city enrollment by 470. In the county four white schools, there were 2,975 students
registered at the end of the second week of school. At Middleton Attendance Center there were
1,792 Negro students in all 12 grades.
