Sellers leads Clarkdale by Knights, 13-0
By Bill Dyess
The Clarkdale Bulldogs defeated the West Lauderdale Knights 13-0 last night, led by fullback Mickey Sellers who ripped off 154 yards in 11 tries, scored one touchdown and kicked one extra point to lead the Bulldogs to victory.
The Knights threatened to score first in the first quarter, but fumbled the ball on the 6 yard line and the Bulldogs gained possession. The ball changed hands feverishly from te4am to team until late in the second quarter when the Bulldogs drove from their own 6-yard line down to the Knights one where time ran out and the half ended.
The Bulldogs made their first score of the night three minutes after the start of the third quarter. The tally came as result of Seller’ gains of 20, eight, six and 8 yards as he bulled his way into the pay dirt form the three yard line. Sellers also kicked the extra point and the score stood 7-0.
The Bulldogs kicked to the Knights and force them to give up the ball on the knights own 45 yard line, where Sellers and Garry Merrill stepped off two 25 yard runs to put the Bulldogs on the Knights’ one yard line. Quarterback Rodger Rolison sneaked the ball over for the final score of the night to make it 13-0.
Rodger Rolison made another big gain early in the final quarter to take the Bulldogs down to the Knights nine yard line. Quarterback Donald Martin passed to Garry Kittrell for the score but it was called back because of illegal motion in the Bulldog backfield. The next down proved useless and the Knights took over on their own 10 yard line.
The Knights failed to muster enough power to move the ball and the Bulldogs took over on the Knight 35. Once again halfback Rodger Rolison stepped off 24 yard to carry the ball down to the nine yard line. After two attempts to reach the goal on the ground failed, quarterback Donald Martin took to the air but the pass was incomplete.
The Knights took over once again, but failed to get out of their own territory. This time, as though alternating with Rolison, Sellers caught Martin’ s pass to go to the 9 yard line. After two attempts to reach pay dirt, the game ended with the Bulldogs on the five yard line.
