City enrollment at the end of the first week came to 1,826 white and 4,431 Negro students. Enrollment in each of the county’s white schools was as follows: Clarkdale, 503; Northeast, 882; Southeast, 690; and West, 900. Enrollment figures for city white schools were as follows, with those for last year in parentheses: Tuxedo, 126 (132); Oakland Height, 489 (514); West Hills, 578 (528); Poplar Springs, 519 (482); Highland, 321 (475); Chalk, 422 (416); Witherspoon, 379 (374); Stevenson, 280 (331); Marion Park, 390 (425); Northwest, 993 (961); Meridian Senior High 896 (825); Junior College, night school, 340 (218). Decreases were registered in Tuxedo, South Side, Oakland Heights and Marion Park schools. The decrease at Stevenson was attributed to the discontinuance of the speech therapy clinic in that school, which accounted usually for 50 or 60 students. Speech therapists this year were going to individual schools over the city to do their work. Negro school enrollment was: Magnolia, 1103 (1,018); East End, 483 (455); Mt. Barton, 374 (383); Wechsler, 598 (596); West End, 627 (575); Carver, 568 (527); Harris High, 491 (462) and Harris Junior College, 188 (126).
