were not pleasant but they did provide the young Northeast Players with a lot of valuable
experience. Experience that should begin to pay dividends this year.
Saturday night the shoe will be on the other foot. This time it’s the Southeast Tigers that
is new at the game of Football. The Tigers are one of three new Lauderdale county schools
fielding football teams for the first time this year. The other two are Clarkdale and West
Lauderdale High. In it only game to date the Southeast Tigers suffered a 12-6 defeat at the
hands of Clarkdale last Friday night.
Because virtually all of the players who saw action with Northeast last year are back for
another campaign this fall, the Trojans will go into Saturday night’s game favored over the
Tigers, coached by Dick Massengill. But Holloway is not allowing his Trojans to become over
confident and consequently this week is warning them that this could be a fatal mistake.
“Southeast is big,” he said “and we look for a tough game Saturday night. The experience they
gained in the game last week will be valuable to them and they’ll be better prepared this week
that they were then.” Holloway said that the Trojans have looked much better in preseason
practice sessions that a year ago. He plans to platoon to a great extent with two lineups available
for duty.
One unit would include: Bobby McElroy (150) and Frank Covington (152) ends;
Norman Nelson (157) and Robert White (167) tackles; Harry Dennis (165) and Jimmy Miler
(160) guards; Walter Hamm (182) Center; Joe Miller (130) QB; Tim Gibson (150) and Roy
Stafford (155) halfbacks and Bob Goldsby (170) at fullback.
The second group is made up of David Wright (157) and Jim Gibson (150) ends; John
Hicks (180) and Larry Swain (170) tackles; Carrol White (135) and Ricky Crosby (168) guards;
