Vanessa Wegener , a familiar face in Toongabbie and former Woman of the Year for Seven Hills in 2019 , is sowing the seeds of change in her neighbourhood through her involvement with Box Divvy , a grassroots movement enabling access to affordable and fresh produce .

For several years Vanessa has been a dedicated ‘ Hubster ’ for Box Divvy , bringing fresh , affordable produce to her fellow residents while fostering a sense of community .

Her journey with Box Divvy began when a fellow school mum introduced her to the initiative . Intrigued by the prospect of accessing bulk fresh produce for school BBQs , Vanessa joined the Hub .

“ I didn ’ t know how it would work , but I was impressed by the freshness , volume , and pricing ,” she recalls .

So impressed , in fact , that she took over the Hub herself .

“ I couldn ’ t get over the quality and the community spirit it fostered ,” Vanessa says .

Box Divvy operates as a vital link between communities and local farmers and food producers , offering market-fresh , locally and Australian-grown , seasonal fruit , vegetables , and groceries . This grassroots movement is reshaping the way locals access their food , providing a viable alternative to supermarkets while supporting local growers .

One key aspect of Box Divvy that resonates with Vanessa and her community is its pricing transparency . The initiative discloses prices paid to growers and suppliers , ensuring produce is up to 30 per cent cheaper than supermarkets , while fairly compensating farmers with 60 cents of every dollar spent — compared to the 30 cents often offered by supermarkets . Vanessa says , “ It ’ s about creating a fairer food system where everyone benefits .”

Running the Hub has brought about

heartwarming moments for Vanessa , such as connecting with a neighbour who , despite living on the same street for 13 years , had never exchanged a word until they connected through the Hub . Another highlight has been the opportunity to offer “ kindness boxes ” to community members in need , demonstrating the power of food to unite people .

Vanessa ’ s dedication to Box Divvy reflects her passion for community wellness and healthy eating .

“ When you love your community , you want to see them eat healthy ,” she says .

Through Box Divvy she aims to provide easy access to nutritious foods , helping families cut down on unhealthy options and supermarket visits .

Feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive , with members appreciating the access to fresh , seasonal produce and the community connections fostered through the Hub .

Vanessa encourages others to join the Box Divvy movement , either by becoming members of her Hub or starting their own . “ There ’ s a real need for new hubs . Hubsters get paid for their efforts , making it an excellent opportunity for people to run a micro-business with substantial support from Box Divvy .”
