SUBARU ’ S POPULAR OUTBACK AWD GETS A TURBOCHARGED OPTION
In a motoring world today where box-like SUVs rule the Subaru Outback AWD wagon is somewhat of an enigma – a high riding wagon with excellent ground clearance that remains a popular choice with buyers .
It usually ranks in the top three in large SUV sales , a perennial favourite that was launched in its sixth generation in 2021 . Previously offered with a six-cylinder engine and a turbo diesel four-cylinder , but in this series , only available as a naturally aspirated fourcylinder petrol .
However , with the models recent 2023 model year updates it gained a turbocharged option – two turbo XT models in fact , the XT Sport at $ 52,190 and the better equipped XT Touring at $ 55,190 . These prices are $ 5,000 more than the equivalent naturally aspirated models .
Are they worth the extra – most definitely . The turbo 2.4-litre boxer or horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine gains 32 per cent more power , 42 per cent more torque and its performance uplift is most noticeable .
The engine linked to a CVT or continuously variable automatic with programmed steps that mimic a conventional automatic . Braked towing capacity also lifts by 400kg to 2400kg but combined cycle fuel usage grows – from 7.3 to 9.0 litres / 100km .
This five-seat wagon with lift sound clearance and Symmetrical all-wheeldrive is perfect for those wanting to explore our great outdoors – highly competent and now with what Subaru call X-mode with several drive features that give it far more capability in snow and mud . It excels in cabin comfort and sensibly shod with high profile tyres it offers a very comfortable ride .
The XT Sport seats whilst trimmed
in synthetic leather are hard to distinguish from the real thing but importantly the fit and finish and overall quality of the Subaru Outback is top class . But it ’ s not perfect , it lacks wireless phone charging and its centre touch screen whilst large can be fiddly and frustrating to use , and
the instrumentation in parts is too compressed for quick reference .
What strikes you with the Subaru Outback , however , is the outstanding quality and fit and finish . And it ’ s part of this model ’ s longstanding success over 25 years , a point not lost on many returning customers .
