A Challenging Read

Mrs F Newton

On 23 June 2016 two teams of students from Years 7, 8 and 9 represented Heritage High School at the 9th Annual Derbyshire Reading Challenge. The Reading Challenge was held at Tupton Hall School and teams of enthusiastic readers from schools across the area put their knowledge of literature to the test.
The Reading Challenge is a book quiz on a huge scale. There was an‘ initials’ round( in which all of the answers were book characters) and rounds based on sweets, mirrors and addresses in fiction. There was also an a-z round that contained 26 questions. There was one answer in the round beginning with each letter in the alphabet but the questions were read in random order so you did not know which letter would come up next! The event takes an enormous amount of planning and preparation and we are extremely grateful to Janet Pickering and all of the staff at Tupton for putting on such a fantastic annual event.
The Heritage teams for 2016 carried the traditional reading challenge names of, The Heritage Stars and The Heritage Penguins. The Heritage Stars this year were Abigail Hattersley, Lydia Allen and Shannon Palmer. All three members of the team are in Year 8 and were members of the Heritage Carnegie shadowing group this year. They had a bit of a head start in the picture round that involved naming the authors as they had met 3 out of 10 of them three days earlier at the Carnegie awards event!
The Heritage Penguins were, Kristie Marshall, Emily Oke and Jordan Dickson from Year 7 and Brandon Noakes from Year 9. This is the third year in a row that Brandon has represented Heritage at the Reading Challenge. As the competition is only open to students in Key Stage 3 this is also, very sadly, the last year that he will take part in the event. We would like to say a huge thank you to Brandon for being such a dedicated and consistent team member for the last three years as well as a huge congratulations to all of the students who took part.
Although neither Heritage team won the Reading Challenge, the students were excellent representatives of the school and demonstrated some outstanding knowledge and fantastic team work skills. We hope that you all keep reading and have already started preparing for next year’ s quiz. A big thank you to Friends of Heritage for funding the teams entry into the competition.

HEPP Workshop

Mrs T Oley-Jones

Heritage Year 8 students were given the opportunity to participate in a workshop aboard the HEPP & CO Outreach Bus. The aim was to deliver inspirational and engaging activities to highlight the vast array of opportunities available in higher education to young people.
" We want to show young people the vast range of opportunities they have, locally and nationally, and ensure that they are considering their futures now." HEPP & CO
HEPP & CO is collaboration between universities and colleges funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, and part of the Higher Education Progression Partnership, which has been working with schools in the region since 2012.
The tour is supported by Sheffield Hallam, the University of Sheffield and six local colleges: Doncaster, University Campus Barnsley, Dearne Valley, Chesterfield, Rotherham and Sheffield. The tour will provide impartial and independent advice and information to our Year 8 students about higher education.
The custom bus allows students to participate in different activities themed around helping them to understand their options after school or college, raising their horizons and ensuring they know what they can do now to prepare for their future. The bus was parked within Heritage High School grounds for two days to ensure every Year 8 student had the chance to participate.
