How to Prepare for a Photo Shoot

by Kailah Clifft

Plan your hair and makeup.

Hair and makeup are essential for a successful shoot. Many models forget this, especially when they are told that a makeup artist or hair stylist will be assisting on the shoot. Even if they are provided, always bring makeup and hair essentials to every shoot. Things fall through in the fashion industry all the time. Sometimes makeup artists cancel at last minute, and a model is left to provide her own hair and makeup. A good makeup bag should contain high-quality brushes, concealer, foundation, powder, mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow, highlighter, and lipstick. These are the essentials for good photo makeup, but remember that point of a shoot isn’t to look good; it’s to look great! To guarantee this, pack a variety of eye shadows and lipsticks. Also keep in mind that light bounces off of shiny makeup, so be sure to bring matte or cream formulations instead.

For hair, always bring the basics, which include hair ties, bobby pins, hairspray, and a brush or comb. Additionally, consider bringing a hair straightener, curling iron or hot rollers, and more specialized hair care products. Hair should be freshly-dyed and cut before a photo shoot, since roots and a stale cut can become exaggerated under studio lighting. Unless otherwise specified, always arrive at a shoot with clean hair and a clean face. Professional-looking hair and makeup are essential components of a good photo shoot, and require a clean slate in order to not look oily or flaky.

So you’re preparing for a photo shoot and you have all of your clothes, shoes, and accessories packed—but are you really ready? This is an important question, as the biggest key to having a successful photo shoot is simply being prepared. There are many things that models forget to consider when preparing for a shoot. These tips will help you prepare for whatever photo shoot you have planned.

Do your nails.

Nails must be well-manicured and polished, and able to coordinate with a variety of outfits and looks. Because of this, it is important to wear a neutral color like tan or cream, or even a simple clear polish. A French manicure is also acceptable. If necessary, have the manicure done professionally to ensure quality.
