ESMOLOL – Esmolol Hydrochloride Esmolol hydrochloride is a beta1-slective adrenergic blocker used to treat or to prevent tachycardia. IUPAC name: methyl(RS)-3-{4-[2-hydroxy-3-(propan-2ylamino)propoxy]phenyl}propanoate Drug class: Beta1-selective adrenergic blocker Route of administration- Intra venous Availability – injections 10mg/ml, 250mg/ml Trade names- Brevibloc Esmolol blocks beta adrenergic receptors in the heart and juxtaglomerular apparatus. It reduces the effect of sympathetic nervous system on heart and kidney tissues and lowers the heart excitability and cardiac output. It decreases the release of rennin. The result is lowering of blood pressure and heart rate. Onset of this drug is less than 5 min. Duration of action is 10-30 min. Peak of action is 10-20min. Indications of Esmolol: to treat supraventricular tachycardia, intra operative & post operative tachycardia and non compensatory tachycardia
