Jazz was considered the heartbeat of the Harlem Renaissance and Duke Ellington's contributions were extensive. Ellington was an American composer, pianist and bandleader of a jazz orchestra. Ellington was one of the first individuals to contribute to the creation of Jazz. He also influenced millions of people around the world through his music while elevating the perception of jazz as an art form.

Musical Achievements

During the Harlem Renaissance, one of the most famous musicians was Louis Armstrong. His achievements and contributions were remarkable. He recorded many hit songs which included the very well known "What a Wonderful World". He was the first African American to write an autobiography, the only Black Jazz musician to publicly speak out against school segregation in 1957 and he appeared in over thirty films. Performing in over 300 concerts a year, Louis Armstrong was one of the most important figures in the early development of American jazz. He was very influential as an artist and will remain a cultural idol indefinitely.
