After Johnson defeated all worthy black opponents, he challenged the reigning champion James Jeffries, a white boxer,. However, Jeffries refused to fight a black man. Jeffries went into retirement for a few years, until he came out to take on Johnson. In 1910 the two boxers went head to head in what was called “The Fight of the Century”. Johnson came out as champion. Unfortunately the defeat from a black man over a white man led to racial tensions and riots across the US.

Baseball changed drastically during the Harlem Renaissance. At the time, baseball was a famous sport but African Americans were not allowed to play. The Negro League was then created under the guidance of Andrew Foster- a former player, manager and the owner for the Chicago American Giants. Foster was a visionary who dreamed that the success of his black major league would one day be able to play with the white leagues. He is known as the Father of Black Baseball, and brought the well deserved recognition to the African American Athletes throughout the United States. Foster was inducted into the Baseball Hall of fame in 1981 for his contribution to Baseball.
