“ Not to be rude , but we need to get this done before the end of the week ,” Blumfield interrupted . “ Can Miles show us the next clip ?’
Neil turned his head toward Blumfield , a look of surprise on his face . “ Um , yeah . Let ’ s view it … Sorry .”
Miles flashed a relieved smile before clicking a few keys on his keyboard . Blumfield sat back in his chair , watching one of the screens where the clip was being displayed . From speakers on the desk , Blumfield ’ s voice drifted out .
“ While many people are familiar with the character of the Queen of Hearts , there are actually several queens featured in Lewis Carroll ’ s books . In Through the Looking Glass , in which Alice goes through a mirror and participates in a giant chess game , there are three queens . There ’ s the queen of the red pieces , the Red Queen , and her counterpart , the White Queen . Alice , playing a pawn for the White Queen , becomes a queen herself once she reaches the last row of the opposing side , as the rules of chess dictate .”
On the screen , four images appeared . All of them featured Queen Alice , though only the two on the left featured the character from Through the Looking Glass . The image in the top left corner was the classic Tenniel illustration of the blondehaired girl in a white dress and pearls , discovering a crown that resembled the head of a chess queen on top of her head . The one below it was from the copy Blumfield owned , portraying Alice wearing a calf-length , white tutu , jewel-encrusted bodice and arm sleeves , lifting a dainty tiara off her head to examine it .
