Behind her were several dark , humanoid shapes with glowing red eyes , representing Queen Alice ’ s followers . Her face was also smug , but the artist had also imparted hints of cruelty .
On their own , the images didn ’ t seem to mean much . But placed side by side , a clear progression could be divined , showing how the older illustrations influenced the contemporary artists ’ depiction of the cult leader .
