How to motivate for this kind of training.
Many believe motivation for improving their digital skills is easy, since it is obvious that the
world is becoming increasingly digitized both in the workplace and in society in general.
But lack of skills limit people's belief in themselves and their ability to learn. There are also
many who fight against digital advances and do not see the usefulness.
A key factor to motivate employee is to make both information about the training and the
training itself as harmless as possible. Do not talk over their head, using buzzwords trying to
impress. Use terms relevant for their job and job situation.
This requires some preparation and insight from the teacher. It is therefore important for the
teacher to find out who, when, where and why the digital competence is needed.
Methods and activities for digital skills training
Like most things in life, also improving digital competence is about training. Do as much
practice as possible and give concrete and directly feedback concerning what to improve and
what is good. Then do more practice. Make sure the progression is tailored to the students,
as it is better to master the basics skills than to know a little about a lot.
Content in training
As mention several places already, the best training is the one tailored to the employees’
needs and level of competence. Then you design the training program based on practical
framework factors as no. of students, learning tools available, time etc. Using ideas and
examples from the European framework for digital competence will help you to define
concrete learning objectives. (Similar tools Norwegian – Italian – Turkish)
One tool for evaluating your skills is possible at Microsoft assessment site, at the moment
only in English and Spanish, but using translations tools in web browser Google Chrome
makes it helpful for other languages as well. At the end of the assessment you may obtain a
free certificate.
Methods for training
Training digital skills should be as practical as possible. Use same devices as used at
workplace. Then introduce one topic and do practical training to be familiar.
Examples and task relevant for the students will reinforce the learning effect.
Practical test may be used at the end of the training course in order to quantify the effect.
