Text “ When At Deadwood Call At The Bodega / John Tierney , Prop ”. Real photo ( no dot screen ) angular aerial view of the town with very clear details including a building side with painted large sign for “ Tom Moore ” ( cigars ). The Bodega was opened by Mike Russell March 6 , 1877 , making it the town ’ s 18th saloon and once a favorite of Buffalo Bill Cody . Outlasting the competition , it is now South Dakota ’ s oldest saloon . Cello is NM . Rare . ( I ) $ 200.00 449 . “‘ THAD SOWDER ’ CHAMPION ROUGH RIDER OF THE WORLD ” REAL PHOTO BUTTON C . 1902-03 . 1.5 ” back stamped by maker Photo Jewelry , Chicago with 1898 patent date . Reverse is convex tin with fixed horizontal pin . Front has crisp real photo of him seated on a bench dressed in rodeo garb and wearing his championship belt . He was known for riding the worst outlaw horses of the Wyoming ranges including the famous rodeo horse Steamboat . Sowder rode at the Denver Festival Of Mountains And Plains in 1901 where he won the championship belt . He then became the star and lead rider in Buffalo Bill Cody ’ s Wild West Show . In 1902 he again won in Denver . In 1903 he did not compete in Denver but did ride in Cheyenne . He 453 last rode in 1905 . He died in 1931 after bouts of paralysis caused by his numerous injuries from his earlier career . Text quoted in our title is on the rim edges but also reads just below the bench in tiny type “ M . T . Sowder / Champion Rough Rider / Of The World .” This is followed by tiny text we believe reads “ M . B . Walker Photo .” Tan stain around 50 % of the narrow cream rim but none into the image area . One of only two examples known to us . Historic and rare . ( K ) $ 500.00 450 . “ BOB YOKUM & HIS BUFFALO TEAM ” ( AND WHITE DOG ) FIRST SEEN 1906 REAL PHOTO BUTTON . Previously , we knew of two different 1.25 ” real photo buttons showing Bob and his wagon hitched to two buffaloes . This 7 / 8 ” real photo is a new discovery for us . No maker . The fixed horizontal pin is gone but replaced with a standard brass spring pin . Moderate foxing , mostly upper left and curl at 11 o ’ clock has a surface crack 1 / 16 ” long . Button retains full gloss and all details are clear . Seated in his wagon with a white dog , is the Pierre , South Dakota saloon owner who side-lined in training buffalo to accept a saddle and rider , being hitched to pull wagons and in 1907 even face off against bulls in a Mexican bullfighting ring . In addition to the text quoted in our title ( appearing upper right on the button ) with magnification it also reads : “ Copyright 06 By Clarke ” and at very bottom “ Yokum And His Buffalo Team ”. Fine . One known . ( I ) $ 200.00 451 . “ MEET ME AT THE QUINCY BARBECUE 1898 ” BUTTON PICTURING THE INTENDED DINNER . 1.25 ” missing a back paper and with a horizontal bar pin . One of the very few buttons to picture dinner still on the hoof ( another shows a buffalo captioned “ Eat Me At Bremen , Kans . June 9 1935 ” see Button Power page 96 ). Upper left border has 1 / 16 ” tiny puncture in cello and extreme edge , mostly on the curl , has some tiny dot sized shallow cello nicks . Button remains stain free . Fine . One known . Rare . ( I ) $ 200.00 452 . CONEY ISLAND RARE “ LUNA PARK ” COLOR TINTED REAL PHOTO BUTTON C . 1905 IN FIRST SEEN 1.25 ” SIZE . In our March 2023 auction , we had this image on a big 4 ” dia . cello with slots on reverse for a wire easel . This is the only example we know of in the 1.25 ” size . No maker with a fixed horizontal bar pin . There are tiny hand colored accents of pink and green . The aerial view is amazing but the images are small due to the scope and grandeur of the scene . Included are a throng of strollers on the boardwalk at lower right edge to the ring master and bare back horse rider at lower left and up to the small top center red heart . The rectangle across the heart reads “ Luna Park ” but it takes sharp , close focus ( a magnifier is necessary ) to read the lettering on the red heart above and below the “ Luna Park ” rectangle that says : “ The Heart Of Coney Isl ’ d ”. Glossy and Exc . One known to us . An amazing early Coney Island souvenir . ( I ) $ 200.00 453 . ATLANTIC CITY “ YOUNG ’ S NEW MILLION DOLLAR PIER ” EARLY AND RARE BUTTON C . 1910 . 1.75 ” with a back paper carrying a Newark union bug ( likely for Whitehead & Hoag ) but with the jobber name : The Wm . H . Horstmann Co . Fifth & Cherry Sts . Philadelphia , Pa . Pictured from the perspective of the famous “ Atlantic City , N . J .” boardwalk is the massive ocean front structure opened in 1907 by John L . Young . The button ’ s caption is “ Young ’ s New Million Dollar Pier ”. Young spared no expense and the interiors were covered in oriental rugs and velvety ceiling to floor draperies . Parties and distinguished guests abounded- it is said President Taft spent most of his time in the dining hall . One known . NM . Rare . ( I ) $ 200.00 454 . FARM BUTTON RARITY “ THIS MAN DIED FROM OVERWORK , TRYING TO BEAT THE PARSONS FEEDER ”. Although documented in Hake ’ s 1986 Collectible Pin-Back Buttons book , in the color section , page 162 , this is its first ( at least in the computer era ) appearance in a Hake ’ s Auction . This 1.75 ” has some age tone on its 1898-1900 W & H back paper and a pencil line . The celluloid has widely scattered small raised bumps to the touch but the only visual age are three very pale tone dots on extreme edge 1-3 o ’ clock . A few minor , usual , surface scratches in reflected light . However , the cello has great gloss , the colors are un faded and deep , and the macabre design is perfectly centered . Overall VF . One of four known to us and rarely obtainable . ( L ) $ 1,000.00
